Leaving Github
As Microsoft runs Github aground, i've abandoned ship, moving my ~25 personal Git repositories to Codeberg and my ~230 organization repos to Disroot, which Codeberg recommends for private repos. If you'd like to do something similar, then feel free to use the Python codebase i used to automate the migrations, which works for any Forgejo-based target (Codeberg and Disroot included). Review the code before you use it, of course, and be warned that i did employ ChatGPT to help me write it quickly.
Codeberg and Disroot are both well-funded, non-profit organizations dedicated to providing free, open-source software services. They are donation-based, use servers based only in Europe, run Forgejo instances for Git hosting, and do not use tracking, ads, profiling, or data mining. Codeberg expects you to mostly keep open-source libraries on which you can use their continuous integration and static pages features. Disroot has no such expectations and but do not provide their own continuous integration or static page hosting. They do, however, offer free Git LFS storage.
Three days in, and i'm liking both Codeberg and Disroot so far.
