I Ate Locust
Disgusted, eyes closed, and committed to the novelty, i dropped the freshly fried locust into my mouth and chewed. Salty, crunchy, and the slightest taste of prawn. Not bad. I ate four more, cringing less each time.
They came courtesy of my flatmate, who was writing a newspaper story on insect eating and needed first-hand experience. Yes, there are lots of reason to eat insects, and i'd do it again, if locusts ever get cheap. Currently they sell for 1$ each in NZ, which is about 500 $/kg, which is about 10 times the cost of a fancy (Scotch fillet) steak.
